Place Attachment
This project is my postgraduate project at Glasgow School of Art. Is aim to discover how nature can help young people in forres build place attachment.
Design stakeholder: Theater Of Seven Direction
I used to hike near the school every day through the changing seasons and times, I was fascinated by the wildness and vitality of Scottish , I often stayed for long time under the trees, the signs of life and age covered the skin of it, the sunlight shone through the gaps of the trees, perhaps they have been here for a hundred years, and will be here for the next hundred years as well. These experiences are what inspired me to create this project
Globalization has brought about a culture of migration, with increased social and geographic mobility, migration has become normalized. In Forres, which is also facing a loss of its young population and an aging population. which lead to a reduction in community infrastructure, affecting the long-term viability of rural towns and cities.
It is important to consider the migration of young people between the ages of 20 and 24, as they are in a critical transition period: their ties to the rural community are ongoing and their sense of belonging to the city is just beginning.
Young people maybe have difficulties in establishing links with the new area and difficul- ties in integrating, The loss of meaning and attachment to place prevents people from continuing to feel, practice and remember their experiences, leading to a loss of identity. This project is to explore nature help young people in Forres to build place attachments, Place attachment play a important role in young people’s migration decisions
The Life archive journal and Place Story webside provides tools and guidance to encourage young people to go out and explore, record and mark through art works, collect memorable objects, and get close to nature. Fostering a connection to Forres, to improve well-being, create a sense of belonging, Promoting pro-environmental behaviors among young people. Create lasting positive memories that they carry with them. Influence their environmental values and actions elsewhere.

Research Approach
DeskResearch. Field Research.
Semi-structured interviews.
Thematic analysis. Observation.
EngagementTool. Co-design.
Semi-structured interview
I chose semi-structured interviews because it’s more informal and free-form, less stressful for the interviewee, gave me an overview of the interviewee, and helped me to draw objective comparisons from the interviewee(Smith, Adrienne 2019)
Street interview
i choose Street interviews because it’s one of the fastest forms of real-time data collection, facilitating the collection of both verbal and nonverbal cues, but are limited in time, as most participants are reluctant to talk for more than five minutes.
Purpose of interview
Understand the variability of place attachment between different groups of people and the reasons why they choose to change places when they are at different life stages, through some basic and place attachment related questions
Outcome
